To help you prepare your arrival in France (Saint-Étienne and Montpellier), please carefully follow the steps below before the start of your studies. We strongly recommend starting these procedures as early as possible, especially for visa and accommodation.

Without this document, you will NOT receive your admission documents and will NOT be able to apply for a visa.

Once your Letter of Commitment has been received and validated, the consortium will provide:
- A certificate of admission, signed by all partner institutions
- A certificate of residence, required for your visa application
These documents are essential for your administrative procedures.
Make sure to keep multiple copies (digital and printed).

Only book your flight after receiving your admission documents and confirming the official start dates of the programme.

European students
Students from the EU, EEA or Switzerland do not require a visa.
A valid passport or ID card is sufficient.
It is strongly recommended to bring your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

Non-European students
Non-EU students must apply for a long-stay student visa (VLS-TS).

⚠️ Important:
- Visa procedures can take up to 3–4 months
- Start your application as soon as you receive your admission documents
- The visa application is your responsibility
- The consortium can support you but cannot guarantee approval

This week will help you:

After arrival, you will receive guidance from the International Office for:
- residence permit validation
- administrative procedures
- student life integration
Accommodation
Housing in France
Students must arrange accommodation before arrival in order to obtain a residence certificate required for visa application.
University Jean Monnet (Saint-Etienne) offers housing options in public and private student residences. Students may also rent accommodation independently, although administrative procedures must then be handled individually.
Important information
- Accommodation must be booked for at least one semester
- It is not possible to change residence immediately after arrival
- Notice periods may apply when leaving accommodation
- Students must confirm their booking directly with the residence provider
Tip
If you are unsure about your long-term accommodation, you may book temporary housing (hotel or short stay) for your first days.

Visa renewal
Students may need to renew their residence permit during their stay in France.
⚠️ Applications must be submitted at least 2 months before expiration.
The International Office will support you throughout this process.
Arrival & student life
During your stay, you will receive continuous support from the International Office for:

- administrative procedures
- residence permit
Montpellier
Students may also study in Montpellier during the programme.
The University of Montpellier has been awarded the “Bienvenue en France” label, recognising its expertise in welcoming international students.
